Teacher Wardrobe Basics
As a teacher myself, I place a huge importance on looking put-together and stylish while also feeling comfortable and confident. When buying clothes, I always consider the practicality of the teacher outfit.
A few things I ask myself before purchasing new clothes are:
1. Is this piece versatile?
Am I able to use this piece in a variety of outfits or am I debating making this purchase because it is a fad? If I can use the piece to create numerous outfits, I am more willing to make the purchase. If I only like it because it is trendy, I think twice and use the questions below to make the final decision.
A great example of a versatile piece is the black high-waisted pants that I am wearing in the picture below. Here are 3 different outfits that I am wearing them. These black pants are the most worn piece in my closet.
2. Does it fit well?
Any piece of clothing that is too tight-fitting or revealing is an automatic no for me. I refuse to wear clothes that I have to constantly adjust throughout the day.
As an elementary school teacher, I may be sitting at my desk or on the carpet with the students. I am constantly leaning down to talk to students. The last thing I want is for my cleavage to be showing and make any student feel uncomfortable. It is unprofessional as well.
I try to steer away from tight-fitting clothes for similar reasons. Clothes need to fit well and look nice.
I don’t want my clothes to be too loose-fitting either. I want them to fit well for my body type.
Often when I find a piece that I truly love, I purchase it in multiple colors.
3. Can I combine this piece with my existing teacher wardrobe?
If the answer to this question is yes, then I am more willing to make the purchase. I am always looking for more clothes that can complement my existing wardrobe.
If the answer is no, then I make my final decision based on the answers to the other questions.
4. Is the material durable or will it fall apart after a few washes?
If it is going to fall apart easily, then don’t waste your money! You will just be repurchasing something new to replace it in the future.
Another thing to consider is laundry care. Always, always, always read the tags!
5. Do I own something similar?
If the answer to this question is no, then I consider purchasing the piece, obviously depending on the answers to the rest of my questions. If the answer to this question is yes, I don’t always put it back on the rack.
I also consider how long I have had that similar piece. If it is outdated, I am more willing to purchase it.
6. Is this purchase within my budget?
If the answer is no but I love it, then I put it on my wishlist. Even before I was a teacher, I have always been very conscious of where I am spending my money. I don’t allow myself to be careless with my money.
Outfits for Every Teacher Occasion
Teachers play many roles throughout the year. Between teacher conferences, parent meetings, and casual Fridays, teachers need outfits that fit the many teacher settings.
I enjoy putting together outfits that make me feel confident in every setting. Because of this, I mix and match pieces to create a variety of teacher looks that I feel comfortable wearing.
